Trish Keenan appreciation

Trish Keenan was the amazing singer and co-creator of the band Broadcast. She recently passed away and it is an unfortunate loss as she and her music were a great inspiration to so many. There's much more to say but I suggest reading the article from the other day on Pitchfork.

Our friend Neil dedicated his most recent radio show to her and it serves as an excellent overview of her work with Broadcast. Jeff from Arc in Round (a fantastic Philly band) was kind enough to host it and I strongly urge you to check it out while it's available.

Whew. Best idea I ever had: leaving Connecticut last night instead of this morning. Probably the best because now I can blog about it. Either way, it wasn't easy given the 2 glasses of wine and one glass of Three Philosophers I had before the 3 hour trip, but, it made me think of another list since it is the season of listing.

Even though music dominates our lives most of the time here at Written Words and Web-logging Division of Faux Slang, Ent., there is a second passion of ours which should be come apparent to anyone who has every spent more than about an hour with any of us. On tour, it is usually comedians that get us through the long tedious drives and last night was no different even though "tour" was me and my wife in a car driving from my parents' house back back to our home. So... here goes my top 6 list of comedians based on two criteria: (1) overall driving-listening experience, and (2) laugh factor (i.e. are the points during the drive where I feel unsafe because I'm laughing so hard, more unsafe = way better). Also, first impressions count more than continued listening power, although it is helpful to have a comedy album that you can play over and over again.

Here we go
1. David Cross - first album is the best ("do ya'lls people eat oatmeal?"), but the second one is great for the "...has anyone here every been aborted?... not funny says she.." remark.

2. John Mulaney - Though he could be #1, he's only got one album so far. But good lord, the first time I heard him I almost drove off the side of the BQE.

3. Patton Oswalt - Death Bed: The Bed that Eats People, bucket of shame... the list goes on

4. Eugene Mirman - This man is totally insane. I can't think of any quotes because they are too good for me to get the wording right in print. His twitter is amazing too.

5. Richard Pryor - That N***er is funny

6. Maria Bamford - if only because she made Indiana tolerable.

Honorable Mention: Zach Galifianakis - but we don't have any of his records ... booo!!

First of all, Happy Merry Christmas Time!! I'm trying to strike a balance between the people who like the more PC Happy Holidays, and the people, like the old guy I buy baseball cards from, who looked me in the eye intensely in order to very deliberately say, "Merry Christmas." Its like they own Jesus or something... Anyway...

So I'm organizing my iTunes right now on the day before the day before Xmas and I realized that Ian had made a 2010 album list so here goes mine...except that it is a 7" list because I have what seems to be adult ADD when tackling too many new albums. Also, it is a top 5 which I think is WAY harder than a top 25.

Here Goes:
1. No Age - Glitter (the B-Side is sooooooo good)
2. Sonny and the Sunsets - Stranded (actually 2009 but squeaked in here because they rule)
3. Charlotte Gainsbourg - Heaven Can Wait
4. Male Bonding / Dumb Dumb Girls Split (Record Store Day Exclusive!)

Honorable Mention (because I don't own it yet): Reading Rainbow / Coasting Split (spent my money on beer before the show, but I did donate the full $10 at the door).

Also, totally objectively speaking, our 7" in 2011 will slay all of the aforementioned fantastic records.

I'm not a music critic. I was keeping a blog for a while but I tend to bring too much emotion and personal bias into it. It's also hard to keep up with music in these fast-paced times especially since most of my time is spent working on my own music, projects, life, etc. I don't get a chance to hear everything let alone absorb things on the level required for any degree of journalistic integrity. However, I do enjoy making lists.

I feel like a lot of people slept on this band, or maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention last year. I liked them right away but it has since grown on me quite a bit. It seems I hear far too much about certain bands and not enough about bands like White Denim.

White Denim has a real dirty rock and roll vibe but with some truly soulful vocals that bounce somewhere between Sly Stone and Marc Bolan. Musically, one could easily draw parallels to Zeppelin or Hendrix, but they're much closer to Detroit rock despite their home base in Austin.

If what I've said sounds intriguing then I highly suggest you check out their album "Fits" right away. "Regina Holding Hands" is one of my favorite songs at the moment, but it's one of many greats on that album. For those of you who are familiar already, be advised that they are getting ready to release a new album. In the mean time they've posted an album's worth of older material on their site for free download. I would also highly recommend it.

Check out Dan's wife's blog. She makes amazing paintings on pretty much a daily basis and posts them along with charming anecdotes from their day to day. I like that she always uses such vivid color. When I first got laid off I went to dogsit/housesit at my friends home in the mountains. I had all these grand plans of writing and recording a whole album for my side project but I found it hard to get into the right mindset that week.

One night I thought it would be really funny to watch "Bolt" with the dogs I was looking after - Boomer and Holly. It was a surprisingly entertaining movie. Most nights ended with me, discouraged with my lack of progress, drinking a few beers and playing "Assassin's Creed" which is a fantastic video game that takes place during the crusades and involves lots of throat slitting. I ended up finishing the game but not my album.

Fortunately I managed to get my shit together enough to have a night end with me recording a demo for a Faux Slang song. What I didn't realize at the time is that across this huge yard there is another house where people could hear me as clear as a bell belting out this song. Something about the acoustics of the adjoining properties - like that one bench in Washington square. The song is basically about feeling out of place with the rat race and having a need for creative fulfillment. It's got a lot of my heart in it.

Rick and I have been working on the song for a while now but it needed Adam and Dan's finishing touches. We've played it before live but the other night it finally came together. You can listen to a more recent demo of it here.

I hope you like it. As the say in the rat race, "It is what it is."

Semantics and Aesthetics of Pop, Music, and Culture (Part 1 - Introduction)

Creativity is a word often incorrectly associated with one’s personality. Despite the occasional misappropriation of its content, ‘creativity’ is usually meant to denote the presence of novelty in a situation, product, or personality style. The word is obviously an adjective derived from the verb to create. There are three dictionary definitions of create listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The first definition is general: to bringing things into existence (à la God or Allah). The second and third definitions qualify the first; to produce, and to produce through imagination and skill. The second and third definitions of creativity definitely apply to music, and may or may not apply to songs cast into the annals of popular music.

The term ‘popular music’ consists of two words, one of which has many connotations. Middlton (1990) outlined four possible working definitions of the term: (1) popular music is inferior to some other kind of music, (2) Popular music is a catch-all for that which is not folk or art music, (3) popular music is that which is produced for or by a particular social group, and (4) popular music is that which is widely distributed by mass media or in a mass market. Definitions one and two are obviously negative or discounting of any intrinsic value in the content of pop while definitions 3 and 4 are more kind.

Morley (2003) provides a different picture of popular music as that which is continuous with more “serious” forms, but that exists to titillate, annoy, persuade, and even outrage others in a social setting. Morely’s definition is less scientific but more consistent with the tendencies of the creators beyond pop songs than those who execute its performance either in the studio or on some giant pyrotechnic-drenched stage somewhere in the middle of a stadium. Morley’s definition is also more positive than Middleton’s, however, the aim of Middleton’s discussion is to legitimize the majority of the trends in popular music as also contiguous with previously established ‘serious’ compositional techniques. That is, Middleton’s definition is from the perspective of the field of critics whereas Morley’s definition is from the perspective of the detached historical viewpoint that has become very popular in Post-WII art and cultural analysis. The two authors converge at a single point: popular music is our music, and is the music that is around whether we like it or not.

Regardless of the definition, popular music is popular. It is subject to a democratic process of election and rejection and everyone has some opinion of its function. Like other popular things (high school prom queens, movies, alcohol) it may make one swoon, despise, think, zone-out, etc. Music (serious and popular) is created usually by one or a group of people in a particular live instant, or written down, recorded, or otherwise documented at a single point in time by one or a few collaborators. Why am I going through these semantic intricacies? Because we use the words popular, music, and creative, all the time, usually together, and because I believe we have a poor understanding of why those terms appear together so often, and the ultimate question is whether or not popular music is by definition creative. That question is easy to answer (yes) when viewed through Morley or Middleton’s lens, but less easy to digest when personal tastes and those aligned with the masses are stirred, boiled, dried, and set by the juggernaut that is the recording industry. Is Lady Gaga creative? Is her music novel? Are other mass produced products equal in integrity to those designed for opposite purposes (e.g., The Rite of Spring). Over the course of the next few months, I’ll attempt to answer some of these questions of taste, value, aesthetics, history, structure, and yes, creativity in popular music. Like most pop culture deviants, I hope that my words will provoke a range of emotions, but mostly I hope that they make you think about what you like, why you like it, and why other people do or do not like it. Oh and I hope that you appreciate more music as a result.

Hey, friends. In addition to Adam being back from touring the universe, Dan our original bass player and founding member is back in the band. We sound better then ever. We've split the difference between what we originally set out to do(and to some degree lost) and what we've learned in our time without him.

You can witness this revised direction and renewed enthusiasm on Aug. 3rd. We are opening for local hardcore punks Women at their record release show at the Danger Danger Gallery. Stream their new album at their site. Whatever Brains(N.C.) and Rabble Rabble(Chicago) are also playing. The last time we saw Women we were all impressed with how good they are. It had been a while since they had played out and they've gone through some changes as well. It will be a rad show.

The Zombi show last week was a really good time. Thanks to everyone who came out. Kristian filled in for Adam on drums and we feel it went quite well. Keep an eye out as we may be playing more shows with him in the future.

This past weekend we began tracking our new record. Everything is sounding amazing already and while I can't wait to get it finished we really want to take our time with this and give it our best effort.

We're recording with a friend of ours who we've all worked with before on past projects. He is quite good at what he does and has about the best set-up we'll find that's within our budget. In addition, he really gets who we are and where we are coming from - something you can't put a price tag on.

Get excited, cause we would be if we were watching you.

so apparently i neglected to mention that we are playing a comedy show called Bedtime Stories tonight at Connie's at 9th and Washington. $10 BYOB

But also, the real deal is that we are playing October 9th at Johnny Brenda's with a band called "Drummer The Band" which features a bunch of drummers - most notably the drummer from Black Keys. Their songs sound pretty rad and the other band - Royal Bangs - is someone Adam is currently digging on quite a bit.

Just thought you should know.

Also we did a photo shoot with our friend Dustin that came out fantastic. Look for them in a press kit near you. But seriously, we can't wait to share them.

Thanks to all the people who came to see us at Green Line. It was a great time. We were a bit rusty but we dusted it off and pulled through just fine. Hunter Gatherer were really great and I urge you to check them out if you haven't already.

Last Christmas

Recently we recorded this cover of Wham's "Last Christmas" for the holiday season. You may have seen something about it on philebrity. They had some unusually nice things to say despite ourtendancy to press record with a little too much of the nog in us. You can download the song from their site or listen to it on our myspace. Also, listen to WPRB 103.3 out of Princeton the next couple days and you may hear it. Jon Solomon is doing his 24 hour Christmas radio show and his shows never disappoint.

Our plan was to play our last show of the year this past Sunday, but then we were asked to play the Jotto record release. It's guaranteed to be a great show and a total blast(a $10 bottomless cup sounds like a deal to me) so we'll see you there! (details below)

Next up we'll be streamlining and pre-producing things at home until early 2009. Then we are off to the studio to record our first official release. We'll be working with the highly awesome and talented Vytear at Black Unicorn Sound. We are super-excited about the future... as usual.

This past Monday we played a halloween show in Brooklyn with a great turnout as well as a great response. Adam dressed as a future homeless version of himself complete with hysterical rants and pretend pissed pants. Rick was a aging rock guy accented by snake, skull and grenade tattoos. I was an astronaut on vacation – jumpsuit over florida t-shirt with helmet and beach ball bag.

Our friends Mount Olympus played a short set followed by a few Barking Spiders songs since all members were in attendance.

Two days later we played bar noir. Thanks to those who made it out despite the calm that comes the Monday after a weeks worth of citywide partying. I was feeling quite under the weather myself but we were happy with our performance nonetheless. The addition/revamping of songs as well as the addition of some lighting effects has helped rejuvenate us. Things have felt really great lately so I am looking forward to our Khyber show this Sunday. We hope you can make it.

Also, we tweaked the blog to make things more convenient and accessible for everyone.
